A-AAGORA Op-ed in ‘High North News’

A-AAGORA team members affiliated with consortium partners UiT, Pukka Travels and The Board for Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya Protected Landscape authored an opinion piece exploring the potential of ecotourism to drive the protection, restoration and sustainable development of coastal ecosystems in the North Atlantic and Arctic, regions with increasing seasonal tourism that exerts environmental pressure.

The authors, including researchers and protected area managers, argue that ecotourism initiatives focused on local knowledge, nature and wildlife can contribute positively to conservation.

The text describes the A-AAGORA project in the Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya protected area, where a “living laboratory” approach involves multiple stakeholders to test how ecotourism can generate local environmental value. The article points out that well-managed ecotourism can generate income, support conservation, raise awareness and create sustainable opportunities, arguing for the creation of a model for sustainable tourism in marine protected areas.
