A-AAGORA – DEMO PT Collaborative Efforts in Coastal Protection and Ocean Literacy
The DEMO-PT is playing a key role in advancing marine conservation initiatives and encouraging community involvement in coastal areas across Portugal. Through educational initiatives, collaborative workshops and hands-on activities, the project is strengthening its commitment to reducing marine litter, promoting ocean literacy and restoring critical coastal ecosystems. Innovative Solutions for Marine and Coastal Restoration
The DEMO-PT project has also been involved in cutting-edge research into alternative methods of food production, such as the cultivation of edible aquatic plants. Researchers from the University of Aveiro featured in the international documentary series Growing Wild: Project Castaway, highlighting innovative ways to utilise aquatic environments for sustainable food production. Their research on halophyte plants, which are being investigated for use in aquaponics and hydroponics systems, offers an alternative food source and contributes to the restoration of coastal ecosystems. Community and Educational Engagement
One of the key components of DEMO-PT‘s outreach work has been its educational sessions, which are aimed at raising awareness among the younger generation. In recent months, the team has organised various activities promoting ocean literacy. One notable initiative was the children’s reading session Explora o Oceano com o Clio at the Centro de Infância Arte e Qualidade in Aveiro. This event introduced first-year students to the wonders of the ocean, sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for marine conservation from a young age.
Students from the second cycle of basic education in Aveiro, Peniche and Figueira da Foz have also had the opportunity to engage with interactive mini-games developed by the A-AAGORA project. These educational tools encourage sustainable practices concerning marine and coastal environments, and the students actively participate in post-game discussions and evaluations.
Furthermore, the Living Lab of the Ria de Aveiro provided a platform for art-based education. Under the guidance of artist Bruno Costa, students from the Agrupamento de Escolas da Murtosa transformed marine litter into art pieces, raising awareness of the urgent issue of ocean waste through creative expression. This initiative forms part of a wider effort to incorporate art into environmental education and engage local communities in combatting marine pollution.

Collaborative Workshops and Stakeholder Involvement
The project has also held several workshops with local stakeholders, including representatives from public authorities, civil society organisations, academic institutions and businesses in coastal areas. Held in Aveiro, Peniche and Figueira da Foz, these sessions provided a collaborative space for sharing progress, evaluating ongoing solutions and brainstorming future actions for marine conservation. Tools such as Maptionaire, a digital georeferenced questionnaire, were employed to gather valuable insights from stakeholders regarding local challenges and the effectiveness of current initiatives.
Through these workshops, DEMO-PT has fostered a collaborative approach, empowering local stakeholders to contribute to the co-creation and evaluation of the project’s solutions. This participatory model ensures that the actions taken are relevant and impactful, addressing the specific needs and challenges of the communities involved.

Hands-On Scientific Engagement
With the aim of bridging the gap between science and local communities, the A-AAGORA project facilitated a variety of hands-on scientific activities. In one such session, 9th-grade students from Escola Básica de Rio Novo do Príncipe in Cacia explored recycled plastic sensors designed to detect environmental contaminants. In partnership with the Plas2Nano project, the activity demonstrated how plastic waste could be repurposed into valuable environmental monitoring tools.
Such initiatives exemplify DEMO-PT’s dedication to empowering communities through education, collaboration and innovative solutions. By combining scientific research, educational resources and community involvement, the project is helping to establish the groundwork for a sustainable future in which marine ecosystems are preserved and marine pollution is effectively addressed.

A Unified Vision for the Future DEMO-PT‘s work highlights the importance of collective action in addressing urgent marine conservation issues. By uniting various stakeholders, engaging the next generation of environmental stewards, and encouraging scientific innovation, the project continues to protect and restore Portugal’s coastal and marine ecosystems. As it moves forward, the project remains focused on amplifying local voices, co-developing impactful solutions and inspiring others to take action for a healthier ocean and planet.
