A-AAGORA PROJECT

The consortium

The multidisciplinary A-AAGORA consortium involves 30 Partners with complementary expertise on Policy; Governance; Ecology; Environmental Economics; Stakeholder Engagement; Technology development; Business; and international forums.

UAVR – UNIVERSIDADE DE AVEIRO
Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro (UAveiro) is a public foundation under private law whose mission is to contribute to and develop graduate and postgraduate education and training, research and cooperation with society. The vision is to create and transmit knowledge to transform lives, communities, and society, by promoting training for citizenship, in respecting the freedom, equality and dignity of the human person. UAveiro is the A-AAGORA coordinating Institution and co-leads the Atlantic-Arctic Demo-PT.

ACTeon- ACTEON SARL
ACTeon is a French consulting and research company specialised in environmental strategies and policies, mobilising skills in environmental sciences, economics, sociology, political sciences, environmental law and spatial planning.f In A-AAGORA, ACTeon will have a strong transversal role, contributing to setting the right enabling conditions for delivering upscaling and assessing the added-value of innovations (WP1).

CAU- CHRISTIAN-ALBRECHTS-UNIVERSITAET ZU KIEL
Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) is a fully-fledged university with a major focus on research and holds >1.150 scientific staff involved both in teaching and research. Kiel Marine Science (KMS) is one out of four dynamic priority research areas. Around 800 research projects are funded by the federal or state government, the EU and by companies. The Center for Ocean and Society at CAU uses a transdisciplinary research approach to significantly contribute to the sustainable use of coasts and the ocean.

NMSP- naymspace software GmbH & Co. KG
naymspace is a software development company based in Kiel, Germany, specialized in providing customized solutions in mobile app development, web development and serious gaming. With our expertise in game design and development, we work closely with our partners to develop customized software products that meet their specific research and education goals. Our experienced team of developers is committed to using the latest technologies and design principles to create engaging and effective serious games. In A-AAGORA naymspace will develop a gamified decision-making tool to engage stakeholders in the demonstrator regions.

KT- KONNEKT ABLE TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED
Konnektable Technologies is a software technology firm, based in the Republic of Ireland. Some of the domains of KT’s work are Crisis Management, Water Management, Smart Manufacturing and Cyber-Security.
KT’s role in A-AAGORA Project is to design and implement the Atlantic-Arctic Knowledge System (WP3), from the Human Machine Interface to Decision Making, with the aim of raising the situation awareness to the end-users.

UPB- UNIVERSITATEA POLITEHNICA DIN BUCURESTI
University Politehnica of Bucharest (UPB) is a Romanian technical university established in 1818. The main activity of the UPB in A-AAGORA Project is focused on collection, aggregation, presentation and management of data as well as the architecture of A-AAGORA Knowledge System which will be the main platform for data collection, integration and processing. UPB is co-leader of WP3 and will participate in other WPs to link data management with the scope of A-AAGORA Project.

MAP- MAPITA OY
Mapita’s proprietary SaaS Maptionnaire is a hassle-free citizen engagement platform. It enables cities, consultancies, and research organizations to easily collect local insights and make GIS-backed decisions. At Maptionnaire’s core are map-based tools for designing questionnaires, collecting information, and analyzing data. In A-AAGORA, Mapita will provide and co-design gamified decision-making tools to be used in demonstrators to engage multiple stakeholder groups.

CCDR-C- COMISSAO DE COORDENACAO E DESENVOLVIMENTO REGIONAL DO CENTRO
CCDRC is a regional public authority, from central administration, that supports the implementation, at regional level, of policies related to environment, land use and urban planning, regional development, and that provides technical assistance to local authorities and their associations. CCDRC is also responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the regional Smart Specialisation Strategy and for managing the ESIF Regional Programme. Within A-AAGORA project, CCDRC will act as the overall coordinator of the Portuguese Demonstrator.

APA- ADMINISTRACAO DO PORTO DE AVEIRO SA
APA is the port authority of the Port of Aveiro, located in the centre region of Portugal. The port is implementing its energy transition strategy in order to achieve the goals settled by the EU through the European Green Deal, as well as other EU transport policy objectives.
As an important player in the maritime sector aiming for greening its activity by reducing GHG emissions, in A-AAGORA project the port will collaborate with other partners in promoting sustainable mobility and touristic activities, using alternative fuels, as well as support within its jurisdictional area an innovative solution of aquatic biological diversity to mitigate anthropogenic pressures having natured based artificial substrate units for biodiversity restoration.

APFF- ADMINISTRACAO DO PORTO DA FIGUEIRADA FOZ
APFF is a public company that acts as the port authority of the Port of Figueira da Foz, under the governance of APA and is located in the centre region of Portugal.
In small and medium sized ports, the GHG emissions reduction is challenging given financial and technological constrains or limited resources, therefore, within the A-AAGORA, quantification of GHGs emissions will be made in order to identify the pressures and associated emissions to evaluate the impact of decarbonizing scenarios.

CIRA- COMUNIDADE INTERMUNICIPAL DA REGIAO DE AVEIRO
CIRA is a public institucion integrating eleven municipalities corresponding to a NUTS III (PT161), Our mission is to pursue the sustainable development of the region by achieving common goals and visions of the municipalities involved. Six of these municipalities have maritime relations with the ocean and with the lagoon (haff-delta) Ria de Aveiro, where small scale fisheries, nautical tourism and recreation activities are very important. Within A-AAGORA, we aim to contribute in bridging the gap different stages and results of the project and different target audiences in the DEMO-PT.

APA/ARHC- AGENCIA PORTUGUESA DO AMBIENTE

IPMA- INSTITUTO PORTUGUES DO MAR E DA ATMOSFERA IP
IPMA is a Public Research Institution devoted to Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and Technology. IPMA’s mission is the provision of technical and scientific support for the definition of national policy, operating and maintaining scientific infrastructures, data acquisition and processing, maintenance of national scientific databases on its areas of competence, and promotion and coordination of scientific research and technological development in its areas of expertise. These areas include, among others, marine biology, ecology, water and sediment contaminants, toxicology, and, in general, most of the scientific fields related to ocean, meteorology and climate. IPMA also aims to promote and support a sustainable and competitive fishing industry and aquaculture, to contribute for the protection of marine environment, to manage fish stocks to maintain maximum sustainable exploitation and to monitor and upgrade the quality of fishery and aquaculture products, ensuring scientific and technical support for policies defined by the Ministry of Economy and the Sea. In A-AAGORA, IPMA will provide relevant data to achieve the goals of the Demo-PT

PRIO- PRIO SUPPLY, S.A.
PRIO is one of the biggest European players in the biofuel industry, producing high-quality biodiesel exclusively from waste-base raw materials, resorting to the most advanced European technology based on the specifications of the quality standard EN14214. The PRIO’s group also owns a tank terminal in Aveiro’s Port and a network of 250 service stations across Portugal and is the national leader in energy transition solutions for mobility. Within A-AAgora mission, PRIO will be responsible for supplying advanced biofuels to touristic vessels that navigate in Ria of Aveiro and for participating in the Seagrass restoration activities.

STRIX- STRIX LDA
Established since 2001, STRIX is a leading international environmental consultancy company specialized in developing and integrating technological solutions to provide a comprehensive range of services on Environment, Biodiversity and Innovation for development projects. Our recognized expertise has led several institutions, including state regulators, financial institutions and NGOs to select our team of advisors to produce guidance and international best practice documents.
In A-AAGORA, STRIX will deploy underwater biodiversity restauration devices to validate their performance and work towards an effective scale-up strategy.

CCC- CORK COUNTY COUNCIL
Cork County Council (CCC), Ireland, is a Local Authority and thus the main vehicle of governance and public service at local level. The organisation provides a broad range of diverse services to approximately 400,000 citizens. Some services are well publicised, for example: Housing, Roads, Planning, and Environment, but there are a range of other quality services that we provide to our communities, such as Libraries, Fire Service, Community Funding, LEADER, and Arts and Heritage. Additionally, Cork County Council was also selected by national government to be the lead authority for the regional Climate Action Regional Office (CARO) due to the local authority’s previous expertise and success in the area. Cork County Council leads the Atlantic Seaboard South CARO, which supports and coordinates climate action undertaken by the five Local Authorities of Clare, Limerick, Kerry, Cork City and Cork County. This is a key national role in coordinating climate mitigation and adaptation actions across the region and is essential in in order to adequately and effectively respond to the challenges of climate change. In terms of the A-AAGORA project Cork County Council will co-lead with UCC the Irish Demonstration site.

UCC- UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK – NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND, CORK
University College Cork, Ireland is an award-winning institution with a history of independent thinking stretching back over 170 years. UCC is proud to be ranked in the top 1.1% of universities in the world. We have a student population of over 23,000. The Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at UCC Co-ordinates MaREI, the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine research and innovation. The Centre comprises over 220 researchers focusing on defined global challenges such as the Energy Transition, Climate Action and the Blue Economy.

ERINN- ERINN INNOVATION LIMITED
ERINN is a young dynamic Irish company established in 2017. ERINN works to improve the positive impacts of research – supporting projects throughout their lifecycle and beyond. Specialising in science communication and knowledge transfer, ERINN has worked across diverse funding programmes including, Horizon 2020, FP7, EMFF, EIC Accelerator and Pathfinder, LIFE, Interreg, and ERASMUS+. In A-AAgora, ERINN contributes to setting the right enabling conditions for delivering upscaling and assessing the added-value of innovations (WP1) and supports WP2, WP5 and WP6.

NR-PAB- Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya verneområdestyre
The Board for Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya protected landscape is the administrative body for Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya protected landscape, Ytre Karlsøy marine protected area, Måsvær, Flatvær, Kvitvær, Sørfugløya and Breivika nature reserves. We manage the protected areas based on the regulations for the areas – each area has its own set of regulations pertaining to that particular area. In the A-AAgora project we will use all information gathered to make a combined management plan for all the protected areas the Board manages.

KM- KARLSOY KOMMUNE
The Norwegian demo will take place within the municipality of Karlsøy – a coastal archipelago in Troms, characterized by its many islands, large sea area, vast kelp forests and abundant wildlife. The municipality itself is an important partner in the project, as they have a high degree of autonomy both politically and administratively. They are also responsible for ensuring that the residents receive basic welfare benefits. The population is approximately 2,150, and fishing and aquaculture are the largest industries. Within the municipality’s borders, there is a marine protected area which is locally governed. 

UiT- UNIVERSITETET I TROMSOE – NORGES ARKTISKE UNIVERSITET
UiT- the Arctic University of Norway is the northernmost university in the world. Its location on the edge of the Arctic implies a mission for researching issues of high relevance to nature and people  living in the north. UiT have eight Faculties including 17697 students and 3776 employees. The responsibility for AA-Agora lies with the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE), which has worked interdisciplinary over a long time covering topics such as marine biodiversity, ecosystem-based management, climate resilience, sustainable and circular solutions, equity and governance. UiT is also part of the FRAM – High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment (Fram Centre) which includes 20 environmental research institutes.
The Arctic Sustainability Lab is an interdisciplinary research group that is specialized in combining citizen engagement with adaptive, ecosystem-based applications and sustainable transformation. In AA-Agora, the lab will coordinate the Norwegian demonstrator and co-lead WP6. UiT is responsible for mutual learning across cases using the theory of change and design thinking, and for coordinating the development of the lighthouse for restoring and protecting ecosystems and for building climate resilience.

NINA- STIFTELSEN NORSK INSTITUTT FOR NATURFORSKNING NINA
The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) is Norway’s leading institution for applied ecological research. NINA’s activities include ecological research, environmental impact assessments, environmental monitoring, counselling and evaluation. In the A-AAgora project, we will contribute to the development of citizen-driven monitoring methods for ecosystem-based management in the Troms Arctic Archipelago Norway Demo.

NIVA- NORSK INSTITUTT FOR VANNFORSKNING
NIVA is Norway’s leading research institute on water research in a variety of fields such as marine and freshwater biology, water treatment, social science and water pollution. In A-AAgora, NIVA will contribute especially to the demo-case in Northern Norway with kelp forest restoration as part of ecosystem-based management and implementation within the living lab. NIVA will also contribute to policy reports, and cost-benefit analyses of restoration.

PT- PUKKA TRAVELS INTERNATIONAL AS
Pukka Travels is a resource organization for destination development and sustainable solutions for the travel industry in the arctic. Pukka Travels also functions as a operator for maritime, transport, media and nature guiding competence in Tromsø and Lofoten regions. The organization will contribute to the AA-Agora project with eco-tourism concept demos, provide guidelines for responsible visiting of the demo area alongside implementing and analyzing how a visitor contribution tax can be used for restaurant and conservation of the eco systems in the demo area.

UNL- UNIVERSIDADE NOVA DE LISBOA
Established in 1978 as part of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Nova SBE’s mission is to build a global school dedicated to the development of talent and knowledge that produces impact across society. It is in the top-30 European business schools (FT) and is the only Portuguese school to hold the Eduniversal 5 Palms distinction, confirming its category of Universal Business School. The Nova SBE Environmental Economics Knowledge Center’s mission is to produce high-quality, interdisciplinary research by fostering cooperation between natural and social scientists. Based on a rigorous program, we develop knowledge and expertise in our fields to assist forward-looking policymakers and civic leaders to develop solutions for the most pressing environmental challenges for sustainable development. The current research program focuses on the following thematic areas: climate mitigation and adaptation; energy transitions; air pollution; water resources management; valuation of ecosystem services, urban greening and land use management; oceans and marine resources management (bioeconomic modelling), smart cities, and the EU Green Deal. In the context of this project, we are the leaders of WP4, and co-leaders of one task in WP1, besides other collaborations with other WPs.

+ATL- +ATLANTIC ASSOCIACAO PARA UM LABORATORIO COLABORATIVO DO ATLANTICO
The +ATLANTIC CoLAB is a Portuguese not-for-profit R&D+I Collaborative Laboratory with the mission to generate knowledge and value to discover, preserve and sustainably harness the Atlantic Ocean. Its activity focuses on the development of knowledge-based added-value services related to various fields of the blue economy, marine sciences, ocean sustainability, coastal hazards, marine ecosystem’s health, climate change, blue carbon, ocean literacy and science communication. In A-AAGORA, it will contribute to the development of the Digital Knowledge System platform.

INOVA+ – INNOVATION SERVICES, SA
INOVA+ is a consultancy company that for 25 years has supported innovation, the promotion of R&D projects, and access to funding, contributing to the organizations’ growth and success. In A-AAGORA INOVA+ will be supporting the consortium with the Comunication, Dissemination and the Exploitation of the activities and results.

AIR Centre – ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DO ATLANTIC INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CENTRE – AD AIR Centre
AIR Centre is an international networked organisation, with collaboration agreements with more than 20 countries in the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. The AIR Centre leads the CSA BlueMissionAA, co-leads AA-MARINET (AANChOR’s Joint Action) and participates in several EU projects such as SBEP, ASTRAL, MISSION ATLANTIC and COAST (Biodiversa+). In A-AAgora, it will contribute to the establishment of a Community of Practice and to the co-coordination of outreach training activities.

SMS SMARTER MOBILITY SOLUTIONS LTD (AP)
Smarter Mobility Solutions Ltd is a British SME that is engaging with the Climate Change Agenda, at local, European and global level. Our experts are looking for local based solutions on renewable energy to decarbonise mobility and transport, and test them in different settings: cities or regions. We are also developing tools to engage with stakeholders and identify their priorities in decarbonisation. Assessing the potential of existing innovations to be scaled up in large scale demonstration(s) is also part of our strengths. SMS involvement with A-AGORA is in assessing the potential demand for innovations and liaising this project with other regions and initiatives: Danube River Basin and existing initiatives in that region.
