A-AAGORA Joins Global Leaders at COP29 Azerbaijan International Forum on Sustainable Blue Economy 🌊

Ana Lillebø, coordinator of the A-AAGORA project, researcher at CESAM – Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, and Vice-Rector for Sustainability at the Universidade de Aveiro, participated in the high-profile international forum titled “Navigating a Sustainable Blue Economy: Maritime Transport’s Pathway to Climate Resilience” during COP29 Azerbaijan. The event, organized by the League of Arab States, focused on the pivotal role of maritime transport in addressing climate change challenges, with a strong emphasis on innovative solutions and policies.

At the forum, Ana Lillebø shared her expertise on several critical topics impacting the maritime sector’s transition towards sustainability. One of the central themes discussed was the carbon tax and the potential expansion of the Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) to include the maritime sector. These instruments are integral to the European Union’s strategy for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieving climate neutrality. 🌍

Additionally, Ana highlighted the importance of a territorial approach to decarbonization, showcasing the innovative solutions under development through the A-AAGORA project. As part of the European Union’s Mission Ocean initiative, the project aims to offer integrated, region-specific solutions for decarbonizing marine and coastal industries while fostering sustainability in the Atlantic and Arctic basins. 🌊❄️

The A-AAGORA project’s groundbreaking approach was well-received at the forum, as it aligns with global efforts to drive sustainability and climate resilience through collaboration, innovation, and territorial adaptation. The project’s focus on marine ecosystem restoration, biodiversity, and climate resilience has placed it at the forefront of international discussions on the future of the blue economy. 🐋🌱

The discussions at #COP29 highlighted the critical importance of international cooperation and the need for integrated solutions in the transition to a sustainable blue economy. The A-AAGORA project remains committed to leading the charge in tackling the marine and coastal challenges of today while fostering long-term solutions that benefit both the environment and local communities. 🌍

This participation further solidifies the A-AAGORA project’s position as a key player in advancing sustainable maritime policies and the fight against climate change.
