On the 22nd of March 2023, an event of the Mission “Restore our Ocean and water by 2030” of the European Commission took place at the University of Aveiro. The event was organized by the project “A-AAGORA – Blueprint for Atlantic-Arctic Agora on cross-sectoral cooperation for restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems and increased climate resilience through transformative innovation” an Innovation Action of the Mission “Restore our Oceans and Waters by 2023”, for the Atlantic & Arctic Basins Lighthouse.
EU Missions are a new way of bringing concrete solutions to some of society’s biggest challenges, combining research and innovation with the involvement and collaboration of citizens and stakeholders. This mission goal is to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, prevent and eliminate pollution of our oceans, seas and waters, and make the Blue Economy sustainable, carbon neutral and circular economy.
The event was attended by Ms Andreea Strachinescu, Deputy Director General of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MARE.DDG), of the European Commission, who explained the objectives of the Mission. Researchers from the University of Aveiro also presented studies and projects of ongoing restoration actions, which respond to the objectives of the Mission, and which can be expanded and replicated in other sea basins, thus contributing to the definition of measures for the next decade.
